At Old Southwest Health and Rehab, we believe in the power of connection—both human and animal. Recently, we welcomed a new member to our rehab team who is already making a significant impact: Huck, a spirited 2-year-old Australian shepherd. In this Therapy Dog Success Story, Huck has quickly become a beloved companion for our residents, especially during therapy sessions in the gym.
Transforming Lives

Huck’s arrival has transformed the atmosphere at Old Southwest. His playful demeanor and gentle spirit encourage residents to step out of their rooms and engage in physical activity. One standout success story is that of Mr. Gully, a resident who previously spent most of his time in his room. Since Huck joined the team, Mr. Gully has formed a special bond with him. Now, he often finds himself in the gym for hours, tending to Huck and reveling in his cuddles. This newfound companionship has not only improved Mr. Gully’s mood but has also fostered a sense of purpose and joy in his daily routine.
Spreading Joy to All
The benefits of Huck’s presence extend far beyond Mr. Gully. Other residents have also expressed how much they appreciate Huck’s companionship. One resident shared, “Huck keeps me company and gives me someone to love and be loved by. He adds so much joy to my time here at Old Southwest.” The simple act of petting Huck, playing with him, or just enjoying his company has made a noticeable difference in the lives of many residents.
The Power of Pet Therapy
Research supports what we see every day at Old Southwest: therapy dogs play a vital role in enhancing the well-being of individuals in long-term care settings. They can maintain a positive atmosphere, fulfill the human need for touch, break down communication barriers, and stimulate cognitive function. Research shows that pet therapy lowers loneliness, increases life satisfaction, and improves emotional health in older adults.
